Learn about the history of Hang Pagoda in Ha Tien

Hang Pagoda in Ha Tien was built in the 18th century by Thai monks and fishermen who came here to settle the land. In the beginning, the pagoda did not have a name. In 1771, when the Siamese army invaded the country and withdrew in 1774, the monks followed them back to the country. Local people saw that the temple had been abandoned for a long time, so they invited a monk from Khmer to become the abbot. After that, the pagoda was built a small temple quite close to the old pagoda and named it a Thai pagoda.

In 1880, when brothers Vo Thuong Nghia and Vo Thuong Le jointly renovated the pagoda and named it Hang Pagoda, the abbot was a monk with the Buddhist name Thien Tong. From 1920 to 1975, the pagoda went through four generations of abbots and from 1999 to 2002, the pagoda was led by Venerable Thich Minh Hai and currently Venerable Thich Minh Nhan is the abbot until today.
