Among them, this temple in the west of Rach Gia center is the largest in scale and has the longest history.
Nguyen Trung Truc is a historical figure associated with the anti-French uprising in the second half of the 19th century in the South. He was born during the Minh Mang dynasty and was named Chon. From 1859, he changed his name to Lich (also known as Nam Lich). Later, with his upright and honest personality, his teacher gave him the nickname Trung Truc.
Nguyen Trung Truc was the leader of the anti-French uprising in the South. In 1868, he was captured and beheaded by the French colonialists at Cho Rach Gia. To commemorate a national hero, respectful people secretly worshiped him in Nam Hai Dai Quan Temple (also known as Ca Ong Temple).
Initially, the temple was only covered with simple wood and thatched roofs built by fishermen next to Kien River and Rach Lang. The temple is only about a hundred meters from the East Sea. Through many changes and fluctuations in history, this communal house has been remodeled to become more spacious. Construction began on the communal house in 1964. In 1970, the communal house was inaugurated with a spacious and airy space.

Nguyen Trung Truc Communal House was built in the Eastern architectural style with the shape of the letter “Tam”. The communal house includes 3 areas: the main hall, the east lan, and the west corridor, which are meticulously and sophisticatedly decorated. The communal house gate is designed in the three-door architectural style, with ancient colors and a two-story tiled roof decorated in the shape of “two dragons and pearls”.
The impressive point of the communal house’s architecture is the statue of Mr. Nguyen Trung Truc cast in reddish-brown bronze. Previously, this statue was placed in the “cage market” area of Rach Gia. Later, the statue was repainted reddish brown and moved here.
The main hall of the communal house is designed with a four-cornered curved tiled roof and many decorative borders with wide patterns and motifs of nature and plants. In front of the main hall, there are two pillars embossed with a curving dragon shape, bearing a majestic and impressive appearance.
The columns and rafters of the main hall are all made of concrete. In the main hall there are a total of ten columns. Each pillar has extremely sturdy octagonal legs. In the main hall of the communal house, there are altars to worship people such as Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hien Dieu, Deputy Military Commander Lam Quang Ky… and especially Mr. Nguyen Trung Truc.
Currently, in front of the main hall there is also the tomb of Mr. Nguyen Trung Truc. In the campus there is also a rockery next to an ancient banyan tree that always radiates lush shade. All those green patches are like a gentle touch to make the space of the temple more cool.

Nguyen Trung Truc Communal House Festival is a unique cultural feature that has been passed down for a long time by the people of Rach Gia. Every year, in the 8th lunar month, people from all over will gather at the temple to celebrate this festival. This festival represents the tradition of “drinking water, remember its source”, expressing gratitude to the national hero who has been associated with the history of this local development. The festival is rich in folk culture and the water features of the coastal city.
