Sung Hung is a large ancient temple located near Dinh Cau Phu Quoc. Initially, this place was just a small pagoda, divided into two pagodas: Hung Nhan and Sung Nghia to serve as a place to worship and pray for the deceased. 

Later, these two pagodas were merged, taking the name Sung Hung Phu Quoc Pagoda. Over the years, the pagoda has been repaired many times. The entire pagoda campus is a place of worship for many sacred deities such as Lady Xu Nuong, Hero Nguyen Trung Truc, Statue of Avalokiteśvara, Dai The Chi, Amitabha Buddha…

Origin & meaning of Trai Dan Sung Hung Co Tu festival 

Sung Hung Co Tu Trai Dan Festival is a sacred fasting and prayer festival for the souls of the deceased who have no one to worship and no one to rely on. 

This famous custom originated during the Tang Dynasty in China and passed to Vietnam from the Ly Dynasty. According to the beliefs of Phu Quoc people, this festival will pray for the deceased to escape to the land of bliss and through that, pray for peace and joy for the living.

The main sacrificial rituals in the Trai Dan Sung Hung Co Tu festival in Phu Quoc 

Before starting the Trai Dan Sung Hung Co Tu festival, Phu Quoc people will bring many things to go to the temple to distribute medicine to the poor. Boat and boat owners will bring fruit and cakes to prepare for the main ceremony.  

Within the framework of the festival taking place on the last two lunar days of July, many unique rituals will take place such as:

Sung Hung Pagoda was built in the late 19th century and has many unique ancient architectural features. Sung Hung is a pagoda imbued with the familiar “before the temple, behind the temple” folk architecture of Vietnam. 

The main hall is built on a 2m high stone foundation. In the main hall, there is an altar of the Three Buddhas, including the statue of Amitabha Buddha sitting in the middle and on both sides are the statues of Avalokiteśvara and Mahasthamaprapta.
