History of Sung Duc Pagoda in Phu Quoc
Around the early 1960s, Venerable Thich Nhu Ngoc moved from Quang Ngai to the South to establish his life. He chose Phu Quoc as his place of residence and built a simple pagoda.
However, after only a short time, the old regime’s government decided to demolish the pagoda to make way for the construction of a military airport. Therefore, Venerable Thich Nhu Ngoc decided to relocate the pagoda to another location. With the support of the local people, he built Sung Duc Pagoda and became its first abbot.
Around 1996, when Venerable Thich Nhu Ngoc fell seriously ill, he handed over the abbacy to Venerable Buu Minh. Besides his duties as abbot, Venerable Buu Minh was also a representative of the People’s Council of Phu Quoc Island District at that time. After nine years as abbot, Venerable Buu Minh’s time there ended, and he returned to his parents in Go Quao to fulfill his filial duties.
In 2004, Venerable Thich Giac Phuoc was transferred from Phat Giang Pagoda to Sung Duc Pagoda to guide Buddhist followers in their practice. In 2008, Venerable Phuoc Thien was appointed abbot of the pagoda, a position he holds to this day. During his tenure, Abbot Phuoc has repeatedly renovated and refurbished the pagoda, enhancing its aesthetic appeal while preserving the spiritual and historical character of this renowned tourist destination on Phu Quoc Island.
