The Commemoration Ceremony of Mac Cuu is held annually on the 26th-27th of the 5th lunar month. The ceremony will be held at the Mac Family Temple and the Mac Cuu Memorial Site, in Ha Tien town, Kien Giang province.
The Legend of Mac Cuu and the Origin of the Commemoration Festival
More than 300 years ago, Mac Cuu was the pioneer who founded and developed the land of Ha Tien. In the early 18th century, during his journey to seek a new life, Mac Cuu arrived in the area known then as Phuong Thanh (present-day Ha Tien). Blessed with a favorable trading position and stunning natural scenery, the region inspired him to begin his mission of settlement and expansion.
Later, Mac Cuu pledged allegiance to the Nguyen Lords, officially submitting a petition in the autumn of 1708 (the Year of the Rat) to request that Ha Tien be incorporated into the territory of Dai Viet. This marked a momentous event in affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over its southern lands.
In recognition of his great contributions, the Nguyen Dynasty posthumously conferred upon him the title “Khai Tran Thuong Tru Quoc, Dai Tuong Quan Vu Nghi Cong” (Great General of Virtue and Loyalty, Defender of the Nation) after his death. Later, in the third year of King Minh Mang’s reign, the king issued an edict on September 24, granting him additional honors with the titles Thu Cong – Thuan Nghia – Trung Dang Than (Loyal and Righteous Noble of the Middle Rank).
To honor his legacy, the people of Ha Tien have held an annual Commemoration ceremony for Mac Cuu, which takes place over three days, from May 25 to May 27. This festival has become an important cultural event for the locals, expressing deep gratitude to the founding father of Ha Tien.
